Food ecosystems are critical to an array of diverse groups. Here are a few statistics about some of the key stakeholders:
- Women represent 36 percent of U.S. farmers, generating $12.9 billion in annual sales. The percentage of farms operated by Hispanics, blacks, Native Americans and Asians increased between 2012 and 2017.
- Many farmworkers suffer from poor health, often due to poverty, stress, poor diet, limited access to health care and high rates of diet-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
- Most people on food stamps (82%) buy food in big box stores and grocery chains, spending nearly $52 billion annually.
